Circle Line Pub Crawl Challenge 1998

The twelfth annual round-London pub crawl takes place on Friday 17th July 1998. The rules are broadly the same as in previous years, but there are one or two small changes; so even if you've done the crawl before, please do read on.

Teams of between three and six people can enter. Well, that's the general idea, but I'm very relaxed about team size. The idea is to score as many points as possible. Points are awarded for each pub visited, and for completing a set (see later). Two thirds (rounded up) of your team must drink an alcoholic drink (defined as a single spirit or half pint of beer i.e. one unit of alcohol) in each pub visited. However, the remainder of each team may elect to remain sober-ish by drinking a full measure of a non-alcoholic drink of their choice.

Everyone in the team must drink - visits to the loo are all part of the fun!

Proof of visiting the pub is obtained by answering the question for each pub correctly and writing down the time that you ARRIVED at the pub. Teams that fail to fill in both a correct answer and a time may not be awarded any points.

The judges' decision is final. I've tried to make the questions un-guessable with a balance of hard and undemanding questions so you'd better get your tube maps and travelcards out. If the pub is closed when you arrive at it due to closing early then tough. Visiting such early-closing pubs is the team's responsibility.

Wherever possible, I have nominated a pub within sight of the named station. If you can't find the pub, try looking at the street plan usually found in the booking hall. They are often helpful! It is the responsibility of the team to ensure that questions are answered - no guarantee is given that alternative proof of visiting will be accepted.

With this in mind, it should be noted that you should consider which pubs (or Underground stations) may close early, and visit those in good time if you intend to. Remember that pubs in the City are often affected. As a reward for drinking at the start pub, I shall award a single point to each team. The whole team must be present and drinking at release time to gain this point.

In addition to the single points for visiting pubs, bonuses will be given when you complete a set. A set is defined as the stations on the circle line that also intersect with another line. The number of points you get for the bonus depends on the number of stations in the set.

To make things more interesting, we have declared that Monument (linked to Bank) is on the Northern, Central and DLR lines. This all sounds very complicated so the bonuses awarded are shown in the table below. Note that we're not making you do the whole of the District, Metropolitan or Hammersmith & City lines: we want you to keep moving!

The other bonus is the (DOUBLE SCORE bonus. If you visit the named pub during the course of the evening your overall score will be doubled. The double bonus pub will be outside the Circle line. Different teams will be allocated different pubs for their double bonus. Remember to answer the question though and fill in the time!

Counting all the possible bonuses, it is theoretically possible to score a total of: double bonus x 27 stations + 37 line bonuses + start pub bonus = 130 points (though I'd stand well clear of any team that does afterwards!)

Teams will be released from 5:15pm. Each team's crawl time will be the same (4.5 hours), no matter when they leave the start pub. All teams must start by 6pm. All teams will start from the same location.

Stop Press

In view of the large numbers of ISD now resident in Mermaid House, I am considering moving the start location from The Wellington at Waterloo to La Reina at Blackfriars. Please let me know what you think by using the Feedback icon.
The crawl will finish in The Griffin pub on Villiers Street between Charing Cross and Embankment stations (hint: make this the last pub you aim for!) Any latecomers will be fined 1 pub for every 10 minutes (or part thereof) they are late arriving at the finish. I'll try to be fair when deducting points to ensure that you lose as few bonus points as possible. Remember: the Judges decision is final. This year, the judges are John Smith and Dave Moran.
