Slush Fund

Synopsis: Bodie and Doyle arrest a man (Van Neikerk) before he gets off his plane as it arrives at Heathrow. Van Neikerk is a professional hit man. The only trouble is that CI5 don't know who he's been paid to kill, so Doyle puts on a South African accent and pretends to be the killer. It appears that Van Neikerk is to kill Hope, a journalist who is writing a book that will expose a trans-Europe consortium's fighter aircraft. The people with money want to have him silenced. Others who have spoken up have died in suspicious circumstances; and CI5 try to protect him. Bodie breaks into Hope's house to gather information, but is caught by Mrs. Hope; he puts on a scouse accent and a sob story and Mrs. Hope lets him go. Doyle meets a woman who is interested in him, but he thought that she may have had information for him. They sleep together. Van Neikerk escapes from CI5's custody by killing a junior CI5 man, and immediately heads for Doyle to resume his commision. Doyle is knocked out and put in the boot of a car which is then stolen by joyriders. Doyle escapes from the car moments before the joyriders plunge the car into a quarry to their death. With Doyle gone and Van Neikerk in "his" room, Doyle's new girlfriend calls on him. She is suspicious of the room's new occupant and tells him so, so he kills her. Bodie picks up Doyle, and they receive word from Hope that the killer is meeting him at his paper's Fleet Street office.
